After dinner, the Columbia Showroom featured Trombone Shorty and his Orleans Street Band. Trombone Shorty is a young musician who has already made a name for himself in New Orleans. In a single set, he played trumpet, trombone, electric piano and drums. On both trumpet and trombone, he is absolutely a star. After a set by Trombone Shorty and the band, Grammy Award-winning sax player Charles Neville arrived to jam. He REALLY plays sax. He has been a force on the New Orleans scene for decades, and is a Neville Brother in good standing. He plays with maturity and taste well honed over the years. While her dad, Charles, was on stage, Charmaine Neville joined the festivities. Charmaine is a strong, confident vocalist, who performs a wide range of material. All of it done very well. She sells every phrase of a song with her entire being voice, face, hands, and body knowing that the audience has her fixed in their view. Her material runs from funk, R&B, and rock to jazz. You should hear her do Louis Armstrong! |
