Monday
Monday night was reserved for Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. Every gig they do, or at least all of them that I have seen, are parties in which he and the band ARE the party! They generate a party atmosphere and maintain party momentum without exception. The music is rhythmic, infectious, and danceable. Most of the audience interaction is with Chubby and his washboard man, Earl Sally. Each of them go into the audience to play and dance. Earl even straps his washboard on some chosen female audience member and plays it while she is wearing it. Meanwhile the Bayou Swamp rhythm section pounds the Zydeco beat and they make it funky!
On Monday night, cruisers, performers and the crew of the Queen of the West were in all in Mardi Gras costume. Screaming, booze-swilling, drink-spilling, sweating, Zydeco-dancing, and drooling, ensued and boogied on ‘till well after midnight. The Sheriff doesn’t often shoot people partying, but this party was too much. I shot party revelry ‘till I ran out of memory chips and brain cells, then hauled the remains of my ass back to my cabin.
Tuesday morning, the Queen of the West arrived back at the dock. It was time for we cruisers of the Delta Music Experience to do the Zydeco all the way home.
